What is the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period?

Medicare's Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) is a window of time that happens every year in the fall from Oct. 15 until Dec. 7, which gives people who already have Medicare the opportunity to switch to a new plan or make changes to their existing plan. Those changes would take effect Jan. 1 of the coming year.

It's important to know that the Annual Election Period is an opportunity, not an obligation. If you have a plan and you're satisfied, your plan can renew automatically.

What changes can I make during the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period?

  • Switch from a Medicare supplement plan to a Medicare Advantage plan

  • Switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another

  • Join, switch or drop a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan

  • Change from Original Medicare (Parts A & B) to a Medicare Advantage plan with or without built-in drug coverage

  • Change from Medicare Advantage back to Original Medicare
